I recommend the 3/16 packing. Much easier to install, and it MIGHT cure your weird problem.

Thanks Jeff,
Will do.. I'd rather have to repack more often than burn up shafts that are in good shape.

Just in case you weren't aware (and if you are, my apologies), the mating flange surfaces between the shaft and the engine should not be off by more that .003 of an inch. Ie. if you can get a .003" feeler gauge to slide between the flanges easily, there's a misalignment.

Yep. I did know that and will be checking yet again once I re pack the shafts. Appreciate the knowledge though. Better to be told twice than never

Success! 3/16 did the trick. 4-6 footers today, but it dripped in gear at the dock and not in neutral

Yep now to see if the new plugs and wires cured the popping out the carb over 2k on starboard...once the wind dies down

Re: Boat in the wet, but shafts won't drip
I had a simular problem years ago with GFO packing. I finally went to 2 rings and have had no problems for 10 years maintaining a drip rate.
The GFO can run with very little drip and still run cool.
