Sorry Dog is now mine. 60ft Marinette.

Post by Ron »

As many of you know, Sorry Dog, 1960s Marinette, was destined for the scrap yard. Unfortunately I couldn't let her go, and I bought her for $30K-ish. She's in very bad shape - broken windows, electrolysis, no capstan, DC/AC systems are corroded and jury-rigged, she had a rain flooded compartment, instruments/engines/generator are ancient and not worth saving. And of course her interior is badly in need of renovations. Yellow-jackets, ants and black-widows (I think I saw a dessicated brown-recluse - ugh) had moved in and seemed quite angry about being evicted. The starboard walkway was a mass of webbing, all apparently at my face and head height. Which reminds me, I'm 6'4" and I may need to do something about those ceilings.

I am Ron, 56, never thought of owning a boat, and am wanting to prep for an end of life of leisure and depravity. So, the boat previously called Sorry Dog will be hacked, sawn, chiselled, welded, and revamped into something more deserving than what she is now. What's on the schedule? No idea, as I didn't want a boat in the first place, and none of you stepped up to help her out. She's at HHN on the dry, and needs new propulsion so I can get her to a warmer climate that isn't so hard on the bank account.

If any of you have spare hardware of any sort, let me know. I'll probably need it. Or a tow to Florida?

I'll look in the garage to see what's avail. Even small parts if I still have them including what I think was a spare alternator or generator I never used. Sorry Dog has a history you may be aware of...It may be searchable on the net. But as I recall, a pleasure loving (eccentric) guy, did a huge rework on the boat, turning it into a kind of M on steroids. There were lots of progress reports posted some years ago (plus ten) and I hope you find them to guide you thru your revamp process. Stay true to that and you can't go wrong. Remember, yo will not accomplish your goals overnite -- it's a time suck boat as they all are. I don't think the owner (who I think may have been nick-0named SorryDog as well), poured his creative self into it- attracting lots of gorgeous babes along the way- but cared nothing about long term maintenance. If only the boat could talk.

Bless you !! If you go back at my posts on Sorry Dog, I have documented a bit of her history. I have exchanged emails with the builder, the sad story behind what eventually became your new boat, I also have before and after pictures of this vessel when "Sorry Dog" built her. This was originally a charter/ferry type boat, Sorry Dog added/extended the upper deck from what was a small pilot house. The finished product was absolutely beautiful, looked like a mini cruise ship (down in Jacksonville Fla). Those Detroit engines are actually new, as he replaced them, having to cut holes in the hulls then weld them shut again. He and his son built it together with plans on traveling the Caribbean, then tragically lost his son, then sold the boat shortly after. In case you haven't noticed the vessel has TWO Aluminum Cruisers serial number/data plates, one on the rear of the starboard hull and a newer one up on the dashboard. I believe Sorry Dog had the new second ID plate made by John Althouse after her completion (John had purchased the Marinette rights shortly after Marinette went out of business). Since you are the new owner, you may have luck still talking to Sorry Dog, as he owns Sorry Dog Marine boat sales, down in Fla. I spoke to him a few years ago, nice guy, when I was looking at the boat.

I would post pictures here, but I can't figure out how to get them from my document file onto this site.
