These are some of the pesky riser parts

Hint: Take (or borrow) a laptop to the boat. and go to a
site with a very good catalog (or print out), save the web page so you can see
the parts as you need them. I put the parts I used with location and catalog
numbers on a page.
Order the riser and elbow parts ahead of time, these are
the parts I used to replace everything except the manifold, from
http://www.marineengineparts.com who I endorse. You may need more
"plugs" than come with the riser.
I'll assume you just bought your boat. How to tell if you
have a freshwater or raw water systems, 1) look for a plastic radiator fluid
cooling bottle or 2) look for a radiator cap on a big metal tube (a heat
exchanger). Fresh water systems use antifreeze in the engine block, and
raw water systems use river water in the engine block to cool the system.

Raw water systems are common and not as much of an issue as
some might think. (My previous boat had raw water cooled engines that were more
than 25 years old. My new boat has a fresh water system. Hint: The end gaskets
on a old style heat exchange match the mercruiser part.
Important
 |
Tip #1 for newbies. Like wiring, replace each hose
one at a time. Don't yank them all off. |
 |
Tip #2 If you don't know... expect to replace all the
fittings and buy them ahead of time. |
 |
Tip #3 Somebody else's engine is not yours. Don't assume,
look and see before you order. I have a box full of perfectly good ass-a u and
me parts. It's harder to find the parts than it is to fix them. |
 |
Tip #4 Take a camera and laptop to the boat. Write down
the parts you buy and that fit. Snap pictures, as you'll have forgotten in 2-3
years. Don't order from someone that does not know Chryslers, Crusaders or
your engine in detail. |
 |
Tip #5 Keep the invoices in a folder. |
 |
Tip #6 Cheap hoses and clamps bite... don't use them.
|
Finally decide what you plan to replace... remember safe,
then reliable, then cosmetic. Cooling is a safety issue.

Unless you have done this before, it's easy to damage the O-rings when you
install. So order an extra O-ring.
