Hello All, Wondering if anyone with an inboard has tapped into their hydraulic steering to steer an outboard kicker motor. I'm thinking about installing a Seastar side mount outboard steering cylinder on the swim platform and teeing into the existing plumbing (Seastar 5271 helm, 5313 cylinder, Raymarine Type 1 pump). If it works, the autopilot could steer the boat when the seas are mild. Thinking the rudder should be made larger too. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Got a reply from the people at Seastar: Dennis: Teleflex doesn't have any recommendations in regards to this sort of set up.
I have seen customers do the following, with success: Install a solenoid valve to allow the helmsman to choose from one cylinder to another.
Basically you cannot run these two cylinders at the same time. You will need some sort of selector that will direct fluid from the helm to one cylinder at a time.
Thanks and hope that this helps. Marc

If you want to steer two things but not at the same time (such as the inboard rudders and the outboard kicker) you can parallel up the cylinders, and mechanically lock the one that you do not wish to steer. You do not need to put in a valve to select the desired cylinder, what you need is a lock on the rudders and a lock on the outboard.
I am not sure I see an advantage to doing that, however. You can use your rudders along with steering the kicker, and the kicker can steer whether it is in the water or not.
On my boston whaler, I have a kicker and a 90 hp. They are connected together so that they both turn together. When the kicker is in use, it steers. When the kicker is out of the water, the 90 hp steers.
A short steering cable connecting the two motors will do the trick. I have hydraulic steering on the main engine, and a cable from the steering arm over to the steering arm of the kicker. So they both turn together. Seems to work.

I am sorry, I do not have any photos that don't have my fat self in front of the parts of interest, I looked.
I don't know if I made it clear that the kicker is on my 17' boston whaler, not the Marinette. I have diesels and so no need for a trolling motor. The diesels will idle along at 450 rpm forever, going rutabaga-rutabaga-rutabaga and making the passengers sick.
There is nothing special about the setup on the Whaler. I have a balanced hydraulic steering cylinder driving the tiller on the 90 hp engine. Then I have mechanical steering hardware attached to a different hole in the tiller, that drives the cable. The other end of the cable drives the tiller for the kicker. I use the innermost hole on the big motor's tiller, and the outermost hole on the kicker, so that they both turn at about the same speed. When the boat turns, the kicker "leans" into the turn like the passengers, great fun.
It's all standard hardware except for the 4' (or thereabouts) steering cable, which was special order.

I've been workin' on kicker motor remote steering stuff: *Mounted an UltraFlex 132-OBS side mount hydraulic cylinder *Made steering link from 3/8" SS all-thread and got the heim joint from McMaster-Carr *Ordered a 6 way hydraulic control valve (Hydraforce SV80-61) *In the process of hooking up hoses and controls STAY TUNED... ************************************* Also ran cables for remote start, stop, tilt and mounted control switches vacant holes on the shore power breaker panel. ( See "Kicker Remote Controls" post) Get 'er done

Hello all, Got the hydraulic control valve configured, mounted, and installed yesterday. Today will be bleeding all the air out of both cylinders, connecting the solenoid to a switch, and securing the hoses. Sure hope the valve performs as expected.

Nice & neat setup.
The trouble with getting old, There is a lot of info in memory, I either can't find it or don't trust it if I do!

Thanks Roger Finished the project today. Works great. Had to make a slight adjustment to the trolling motor linkage because it had interference when tilted all the way up while steering. Both cylinders have 4 1/2 turns lock to lock. Wired into the switch panel above helm for the solenoid valve on/off (fused @ 5A). Let's go fishin'!
