distributor gasket leakage

how easy will it be to take out the distrbutor and replace gasket while getting it back in near the same also i had a mech. try to time my motors and he said the tabs were missing in the bell housing used to set timing whats that about and how do we get timing set now thanks in advance guys

The distributors are removed by taking off the crows foot bracket and pulling straight up. Make sure you use a marker and scribe a reference line on the distributor and the engine block. :idea: It is a good idea to pull the cap off the distributor and note where the rotor is pointed. As the distributor can only be installed in the correct location or 180 degrees out of time. :shock:

As for a timming marks have you looked at the front of the engine similar to a engine mounted in a car.

As saying goes... "A picture is worth a thousand words." And with most of us having cell phones capable of taking good resolution pics, I'd recommend taking several from different angles before and during work. Being able to go back and reference a pic could save you a lot of grief later.

I roll the motor over to TDC on cylinder one and verify with the timing mark. Then, if you make a mistake, setting the distributor is relatively simple. This takes a few extra minutes but will prevent chasing your tail later.
