To get a that as a new logo, someone must draw it and donate the copyright to the site. They can NOT copy a pic. I then have to verify that I don't infringe on John's trademark or I have to license the use.

If the copyright for the Sea Horse doesn't work out...

I made this little line drawing of my boat as a logo for the front of a binder with my river maps in it.

If it is not infringing on John's copyright, I'd be happy to "donate" the pic to the site.

No, not if it's original and not a trademarked image you certainly can. I like it a lot.
You agree you are "putting the image in the public domain" with a license to use for promoting Marinette boats on all web sites. You still retain any rights you previously held, but you are giving non-exclusive license under Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA). Note that in CC there is no way to say "you can use this in Marinetteboats, but not anywhere else or in derivative works." Also, because some derivative works may be commercial, I cannot accept materials that are licensed only for educational use or even for general non-commercial use.

In the case of a CC logo, that means that any persons can copy and sell the image on mugs and t-shirts... or modify it as an avatar.

It means that you own the defense of the copyright, not I and I or anyone may freely copy or modify the picture, or use it for any legal purpose. It also means that no one else can claim the unmodified work as original and deny it's the original unmodified work's use or modification to anyone else.
