Raw water pump replacement.

Post by wschneid »

I have an 86 32' sedan flybridge. I am trying to remove the raw water pump from the starboard engine. I want to change the impeller. It is more difficult than I thought. Does anyone have any ideas or instructions to help.

Loosen the belt, remove the whole Sherwood pump assembly. Replace the impeller while off the motor. Install the assembly back on the motor. Line up
and start the upper and lower bolts before you tighten any of them.
Replacing the impeller in place is tougher and takes longer. Remember your direction of spin. I always mark in and out before I pull the assembly.
I also pull the upper hose of the intake for better access. Put the lower input hose on the pump, before you attach it to the engine.

Good advice. Be sure you draw a diagram of the pump's connections and orientation BEFORE removing it or you' could get in all kinds of trouble. (Ahem!)

Both have good advice. It also helps to take a sharpie and mark "top" on top of the pump before removal. It saves a lot of headaches down the road.

On removal, is it necessary to remove the attachment bracket? Should I remove the hoses before trying to losen the 9/16 bolts?

BTW. Does anyone have a part number to the raw water pump needed?

If my memory is correct, the pump will unbolt from the mounting bracket. Doesn't matter when you remove hoses, before or after, whichever is easier. I believe the part number was a 10615K, sherwood impeller, but I could be wrong on that, and everything else.

I've gotten the raw water pump off and removed the old impeller. There weren't any fins missing. I really believe my problem was a loose belt, which eventualy broke. I have a spare impeller, so I am replacing the old one. Some things I have read state that the new impeller should be lubricated before using. Any suggestions on what type of lubricant to use?

I use silicone grease on all rubber parts, gaskets, o-rings etc. Helps lube and should not breakdown the rubber. I figure any grease on the impellers will be blown off in short order anyhow. I only use it for ease of installation and initial dry startup.
