How do you tighten or replace the packing on the rudder shaft of a 39' sedan?
While under way some water is coming in bildge, suspect packing

Unless you have the dripless kind, a proper packing will let water in bilge while underway, the water lubricates the packing. While at the dock, you should have a drip every 5 to 10 seconds. It is one of the drawbacks, you always have water in the bilge.

Re: Packing boxes RUDDER
IF there is no crack, and IF the packing is not shot, you can simply tighten the gland a bit more until the leak stops.

This is NOT like a prop shaft packing gland where high rpm friction will cause heat damage.

Make sure it is leaking excessively before you mess with it! Put some dry toilet paper or similar around it and wait. It will show you how much it leaks. If you don't know where the water is coming from, you don't know what to fix. You also will get a lot from condensation inside the hull. Water in the bilge is normal.
