Oil filler gasket- 318/360

Post by Bud719 »

Does anyone know where to get gaskets for these filler caps? I have tried to make them out of cork and paper, and they always leak!
Thanks!

Either too much pressure on it, check the pvc or did you try to double gasket?

There should be little or no pressure on the cap and no liquid, just fumes. I would get an old inner tube and a pair of scissors and make a gasket.

How about using a fat O-ring?

Interesting - There doesn't seem to be pressure in the valve covers, but there seems to be oil on the gasket all the time. I'll try rubber.
Thanks!

There isn't any pressure, but the amount of oil thrown around under the cap that some weeps by if there isn't a good seal. I had the same problem on a previous engine, never fixed it.

If I recall I have 2 flat gaskets under my breathers and you may also be able to bend up the wings to make it fit a bit tighter. The oil fill caps only have a single gasket, I think.....They seem to fit more snug than the breathers.

Gaskets can be bought at most auto parts stores, for a truck engine , same year as the boat. They still leak, even doubled up. The fix is a grommet with a new breather for the grommet. Bending the wings is helpful also. Look at Mancini racing for the grommet style. They are a bit pricey - there other options , once you pick one out you like.

Thanks for the info! I’m glad I am not alone in having this issue.

Why wouldn’t the system have the breather coming off the center of the valve cover (like the PVC valve side does) and have a normal cap at the oil fill?

What do you think of replacing the combination oil filler with the 2 piece as shown, one on the oil filler, and the other in the top of the valve cover across from the PVC Valve on my Chrysler 360s?

I picked these up at my local Junk yard (degreased then cleaned them with my Apple cider rust remover/ Baking soda - the best) for less than $10?
