I did not know this.
What is a pitot tube?
Basically, a pitot tube is used in wind tunnel experiments and on airplanes to measure flow speed. It's a slender tube that has two holes on it. The front hole is placed in the airstream to measure what's called the stagnation pressure. The side hole measures the static pressure. By measuring the difference between these pressures, you get the dynamic pressure, which can be used to calculate airspeed.
In this case it 's a tube under the boat. The faster you go the more pressure is applied to the end of the tube. In this case it is hooked to a meter that measure the boats speed.

Hello, I realize this is an older post, but I just saw it.! My question is: What is the pilot tube, and where does it go.?
I;m asking because I have a 1987 32 Sedan. I never go up on the bridge ( Double Amputee ), and I don't have a water issue, but still would like to know what it is, and where.. Thanks

Not piLot tube, piTot (middle T not L). It was pretty well explained in the original post. It's a speed measuring device. Aside from GPS calculations, boat speed is measured by a couple of different kinds of devices. One is a little paddlewheel where x number of revs per minute indicate current speed. Another is the pitot tube where water rushing thru actuates a mechanism that senses the pressure and gives a speed readout. As the OP pointed out, air pressure is measured in aircraft. I guess it could also be used in cars.
Thanks for posting. the little gizmo is relatively obscure (unless you're a pilot)

The pitot tube is for measuring airspeed.
The pilot tube is for draining fluids.

Can you explain..I don't understand how/where/why pitot drains

Not the pitot tube. The PILOT tube, also known as the PRT or pilot relief tube.
