Crank Mount Raw Water Pump

Post by honestcharlie56 »

Has anyone converted their raw water pumps from belt drive to crank drive on their chryslers yet? If not, I will probably be attempting this and providing a write up. Benefits include: much less side load on bearings, less maint (eliminating the belt), possibly more reliable (eliminating the belt), easy to change impeller, lower position of pump is less inlet side head to overcome during starts, etc.

ANY THOUGHTS?

I think the Volvo Penta pump would be a good candidate for this. I wish I had room to fit pumps like that on my boat but there is not enough room between the crank and bulkhead.

EWRice,

We are headed to the boat this am to check on this. Finally had a riser rust through so we are working our way through that.....super fun.

Diver Dan solved that problem, but for a different reason: He put big block Chevies in his 32 Express. The front ends of the engines protruded through the bulkhead (cut away?) and into the cabin! Weird but it worked.

Well my 1990 32 SDFB has plenty of room in front of the two 318's to run the pumps. I'm not sure when I'll actually get to it considering we're having to replace exhaust pieces, thru hulls, bottom paint, top side paint, props, etc. etc. etc.
