Lots of old velvet drive transmissions out there. (I've got two spares ) Get a used one cheap, or a good rebuilt one from someone that does them all the time. Don't pay a lot for a questionable one. You HAVE to know what rotation it is set up for, to be able to use one. If you don't know, you have to check the pump.

Thanks for the replies. I saw a video online of a guy rebuilding one, and a look at the schematics makes it appear straightforward. Parts seem to be affordable as well. I'd probably rebuild it regardless of the condition of the fluid. Why risk putting it all together just to pull it apart again? However, that fluid examination (dirty joke in there somewhere) may come in handy for negotiations!

Didn't see your last post BUSIA. That's a good point on the rotation. How can you tell with the pump? Is it marked somewhere on the housing?

There will be a directional arrow cast into the pump on the front of the transmission with the word "TOP" cast into it. Whichever arrow is at the top is the direction the pump is set for.
