In trying to check transmission fluid level in my 1972, 28' express, single 318, I cannot locate a dipstick. In pulling up Borg Warners website I find owners manuals on three different transmissions but not many specifics. I find one like mine pictured, which has a vent on top, that doesn't picture a dipstick. I do have what looks like a 3/4 square head plug (looks like a standard 3/4 pipe thread plug) left rear on transmission but will be difficult to remove. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards to all

looking from the back of the motor it should be a t handle style screw in expanding rubber plug on the left hand side.

Not there. I'm wondering if the dipstick was replaced, for some reason, with the pipe plug I mentioned. It's located left rear on the transmission. I'll have to stand on my head with a wrench and try to get it loose and try to determine if it has sufficient fluid. Thanks for the reply.

Mine is the pipe plug. It has the dipstick attached to it. It's a 68 single

If you have a faucet wrench and a couple exstentions it may save a head or grease in the hair when you fall in. Mine is an oil slick. I think the remote filter setup is leaking.

Thanks for the help Guys. I may check to see if the plug can be replaced with a dipstick and let you know what I find.

Got the pipe plug on the rear of the transmission pulled and sure enough a dip stick was attached. Level was at the "add"
Mark so suctioned out the old and replaced with new stuff. Real pain standing on your head and getting the plug out and wondering if a replacement dipstick as offered on the Internet will work. I understand that they work like the expandable transom plugs in small boats. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll answer my own question. Shoulda looked earlier. Borg makes a threaded adapter for the dipstick and replacement dipstick. I can have both for only $ 50.00 plus shipping and handling. Maybe the old one isn't so bad after all.

Don't know whether you saw FastJeff's advice on checking trans oil levels. He recommends it be done with the oil hot (after running), shut down and immed check levels.
