Exhaust manifold/elbow gasket question

Post by seef158 »

'72 318, with the dual pocket water pump. Should the gaskets between the manifold and the elbow at the rear have the water passages opened up or closed???? If I understand the system correctly I would think the gastket should stop flow from the manifold to the elbow so that the two are isolated from each other. There are ports in the manifold and the elbow but I would think they should be closed up. Anyone know for sure? Thx.

If I read you right, closed for fresh water cooling; open for raw water.

The fresh/raw water cooling terminology always trips me up, I have no antifreeze or hear exchanger, every thing is cooled by river water.....thanks for the reply.

That's raw water cooled. The PO of mine removed the FWC system and I ran RWC for the decade I owned it. Much simpler IF you're not in salt water.
