Exhaust manifold removal

Post by legendlc »

Any tips for removing the outside exhaust manifolds? I have them unbolted and all hoses off. I am assuming the riser has to go with it but I am unable to remove the bellows off the riser to allow the manifold to slide off the studs. Any tips would be appreciated.

Watch "Chrysler 318 cylinder head install-a time lapse" on YouTube, 43 seconds into it they hang a manifold using a sling, good idea.

Agreed sling is a good idea, do i have to remove exhaust bellows or what all has to come off for removal? I seem to not be able to get it off the studs dues to the bellows possibly?

I assume when you say bellows, you are talking about the hose connecting the riser to the exhaust system. You can try to peel it off, but if it is more than a few years old it will be a waste of time. Just cut it off and buy new hose. Depending on how long it is, and who installed it last, it may have a steel wire molded into it. Cut down as far as you can and clip each wire with heavy duty wire cutters.

Perfect thanks for the help. I think I am tracking down my milky oil and wet spark plug on the cylinder closest to the exhaust riser on the outside.

Pics of head after exhaust manifold removed. Was hoping to find a blown gasket or leaking gasket here to answer my question of why liquid in the spark plug hole closest to the riser. If anytime has any thoughts on the condition or if the gasket appears to have leaked I would appreciate the knowledge.

It is entirely possible that leaking (cracked or rusted through) exhaust manifolds or the riser could have allowed water to get in there and do all that damage. Or, you might have simply had a leaking gasket.

If you don't want to waste money on new parts (since they might be not be needed) you could try the following test:

Reassemble the motor with new gaskets (with a thin smear of silicone sealant on EACH side) and see if that cures the problem. Drain the riser and manifolds SOON as you shut the motor down, to eliminate a leak from getting in there. If the motor runs okay after restarting the next morning, repeat the test, but this time don't drain the manifolds. If it still runs okay you might have had a gasket leak--it happens. If not, it's new parts time.

Good luck!

Jeff- thanks so much for the ideas on testing. I am thinking about trying to plug up the passage as well as I can and using g something to get the rust out of it. I was also going to clean all the rust off of the face where the manifold mounts and try to make sure I have a clean flush face for mounting with new gaskets then attempt your recommended test. If the test fails what "parts" am I looking at? New riser and manifold, heads, etc?

Risers and manifolds.

Well, after doing some research on how this open exhaust system works and some self education I think i have a better understanding of it now. Also after getting the manifold and riser out of the bilge where i could see them I learned a lot more. The water passage on both were 100% stopped up and full of rust scale. The exhaust portion was full of rust as well. I am assuming that these cannot be saved at this point. Now i wonder if the other set on this engine are in the same condition? Or all 4 of them?
