Family Boat Resurrected!

Post by HighlandGent »

Good morning!

So glad to be added to the forum!! I have been using a lot of the information on this forum to assist me in my revival project.

I am the owner of the “Highland Lady”. A 1988 32’ Flybridge Sedan docked in Essex, MD. Just outside Baltimore. My parents bought it new in 1988 and it’s been at the same Marina it’s entire life.

After years of boating my Father decided it was too much for just him and my Mom to take the boat out on the water with just the two of them. So in Winter of 2000 my parents winterized the engines and they did not get turned over again until 2016.

The boat continued to be used as a houseboat for the 16 years in between but she never moved under her own power.

In Summer of 2016 a friend of mine and I set out to see if there was any life left in the engines, and therefore maybe some more boating years.

To make a complicated story seem simple, 2 years later and we have gotten 2 amazing boating seasons out on the water. My Father passed away a short time before we started this project and he would have been really happy to see his boat back out and cruising on the bay.

This is my “beginner boat”. It’s quite a lot of boat for someone that’s never captained before but I’ve been getting the hang of it. I really appreciate all the experience and advice I’ve found on here.

Thanks guys

She’s a pretty boat! Glad to hear you’ve got her out cruising again. That is what they were made for!
Pretty cool that it has been in your family for all these years :-) many good years of cruising and enjoyment are yet to come.

Beautiful boat, same color scheme as my 37'. The photo of the fresh engines makes a lot of gearheads like me drool. The story of her being a family heirloom reminds me of my dingy. I am planning on adding a davit to my Big M for it.

This is my dingy ! She is a 1970 Wooster Hellion !

Dad purchased this in '70. These little things were manufactured in Wooster, Ohio by the Rubbermaid Company, yes the same Rubbermaid that makes plastic trash cans and the little containers that you stored last night's meatloaf in !

Sat in the barn since 1972 or so (steering cable broke). Took about 40 hours to polish the gelcoat back to it original color. Rated for a 10 HP, but found a 14 HP Sears Elgin for it. Fun for next summer !

Javalin, that dingy looks amazing. And with a 14hp motor on that tiny thing it’s gonna be pretty quick. Enjoy!
