Overhead 12 Volt DC Accessory Panel Restoration

Postby carl » Sat Dec 17, 2016 8:40 pm

Attached is the "Before" picture of my overhead DC accessory panel restoration. Today I removed the panel, switches and teak enclosure. Traced out and labeled all of the circuits, ordered twenty one new circuit breakers, new copper buss bar material and spent some quality time at the sign shop laying out my new panel. More to come.

Oh God! Nearly upchucked at looking at all that work!

Good luck.

Where are you getting the circuit breakers from? I'm certain a number of folks have need of replacements or would like to have spares or just replace the old ones.

I purchase my circuit breakers from http://www.onlinecomponents.com. They carry AIRPAX and other brands that are drop in replacements for the original AIRPAX breakers and their prices are fair. If you go to their site use the search option and type in W31-X2M1G-10 and you will find a 10 amp breaker, change the last two digits to 15 and you will find the 15 amp breaker, change it again to 20 and you will find the 20 amp breaker. What I like best about this W31 line is they have 8-32 machine screw terminals opposed to the slip on spade type terminal, the screw terminals are much more secure for use on the water. Let me know if you need any further information.

Picked up my new overhead 12 volt accessory panel from the sign shop this morning. I'm back at the restoration of the overhead dash. Out with the old, in with the new. More to come.

Circuit Breakers mounted. Notice I did away with the three incandescent lights for the two bilge pumps and the blowers and replaced them with smaller yet brighter LED red indicator lights.

My overhead 12 Volt DC Accessory Panel Restoration is nearly complete. The only thing left to wire is the three red LED indicator lights for the two bilge pumps, one forward, one aft and the blowers. I need a small terminal strip to finish it properly and will purchase one tomorrow. I just finished testing all circuits and everything is SAT. You will see in the pictures that follow I installed copper buss bars on the load side of the circuit breakers to eliminate all of the jumper wires that the factory had installed, this cleaned things up nicely, I purchased the copper bar from Grainger Item No. 2AAV3. This particular line of circuit breakers works well with buss bars considering their posts are tapped for 8-32 machine screws opposed to the slip on spade type terminal originally installed. I cut the copper bar to length, marked the holes and drilled them out on a small drill press, polished the copper bars and installed them, I used a drop of locktite 242 on each screw to secure them against vibration. Installed all new solder-less terminals and shrink tubing. Lastly placed two non conductive strips of material between the three banks of circuit breakers for a little added insurance. Moving on to my Main DC Panel in the morning. More to come.

If you zoom in on the picture of the panel you will find two circuit breakers on the lower right identified as Fuse Block No.1 and Fuse Block No.2. These two circuit breakers power up two separate fuse blocks which I will be wiring all of my accessories to such as a marine radio, electronics and other systems. I will post pictures of the installation of these accessory fuse blocks once I get started on them.

What are the thick pair of black wires for? Do you also have red/white wires and if so where do they go?
