Ignition System Components & Locations

I'm replacing system components for my ignition system because my engine quits after awhile & the ignition breaker pops when I throttle down or shut the engine off too fast.

Here is what I purchased:

Ballast Resistor - Part Number: CR105
Ignition Control Module - Part Number: CR109
Accel Super Stock Coil - Part Number: 8140

I am having problems matching the current parts with these that I purchased. I can't find the ignition module OR ballast resistor on my current engine. Here is what I have (pics attached)



I can't find the resistor or large ignition module I bought.


I opened the panel and couldn't see it there either???


Where am I not looking? Any advice would be appreciated.

If you look under the distributor cap and see points.
You wont need that transistorized ignition module.
Check your centrifugal advance springs by flicking the rotor inside the cap.
It should spring back.
That silver rusty box with the red wire is the voltage regulator. Looks like it is not hooked up now, maybe P/O replaced altinator with a internal voltage regulator.
Dont see the ballast resitor. It should be located between the +coil and the ignition wire. You maybe frying the coil.
That wiring cluster is the typical wiring for an older .

Pop off your distributor cap. Do you see a wheel (reluctor) with 8 points on it? Or do you see a set of metal contacts with a plastic block riding on a cam (points). If you have points you won't need the new ignition module.

I disconnected the leads to remove the bracket. The coil gets super hot when the ignition key is in the "on" position.

I'll get the ballast resistor installed between the new coil and voltage regulator. I'll also look under the cap to see what kind of system we have there.

Return all the parts you bought and buy new electronic ignition... Makes life simple for a few more bucks.

Sorry about the information on electronic ignition system parts. Based on your description, it sounded like you have an electronic ignition system. There is nothing wrong with the points system. It does not provide the improved performance of the electronic systems but is serviceable. The advantage of the electronic system is in the higher RPM and engine starting performance. You don't need to worry about condensation on the points at start up or spark dwell time at higher RPM.

If you stick with the old style points, install the high output coil. Buy the Mallory 700 resistor. You should wire it into the red (positive) lead into the coil. You need a resistor in the positive line to protect the coil. While you're in there, replace the points an condenser.

As others have suggested, the electronic system can be more reliable. The Pertonix D141700 is a direct replacement for your distributor. It's a plug and play system, all in one package but costs $265.
