1962 wiring/gauge questions

Post by shelbygt »

Trying to get my arms around things before I tear into it. I have 2 sets of gauges/controls, forward and aft. Forward gauges kinda work although they register on the low side, I think. Did some quick checks with my multimeter and found that both forward and aft gauges had 12v power simultaneously. I don't think they both should as the gauges are electric (with sending units). If both sets of gauges are powered the signal from the sending units for oil pressure and water temperature would be split, which I don't believe can be right. Also, it seemed that forward gauges are postive ground (these gauges work). The aft gauges are negative ground and don't work. I may have had enough beer by that time and was confused???? Would it be positive ground in 1962?? I know older cars are positive ground but I thought most manufactures had switched to negative ground some time during the 1950's.

With dual stations. you have to use dual station sender units or the readings are whacko.

Hadn't heard of that. Would I go to the gauge manufacturer for that?

Jeff,

Do you mean two sending units or a sending unit that can feed two gauges?

As it turns out the water and oil gauges were originally wired in parallel. I'm ordering all new gauges and dual station senders. Doubt they had dual station back in the day. Will re-wire individual circuits.

OBTW. VDO has been very helpful and seem to cater to the marine industry. I normally run Auto Meter but I'm running VDO based upon their helpfulness.
