After hassling with that Mickey Mouse strainer gaskets for years, I made my own O-Ring gasket and haven't had a problem since.

Here's the deal; Buy some small vacuum hose (get several sizes--they're cheap). After cutting it to length, rubber cement a wire inside both ends to "glue" it together. Make the cut nice and straight, and make the length JUST small enough to fit into the housing. (Too small and I falls in; too large and it will buckle and leak.) Finally, since the O-ring is thicker, remove the strained disk from the bottom of the stud, add a flat washer to space it down a bit, and reassemble.

I am having the same symptoms but was told to look at my exhaust manifolds. My risers are pretty rusted out and leak a bit.

It was less than $200.00 plus shipping. But they had to replace all the guts (Shaft was gauld real bad) and on my Buick motors it was the best option in my mind.

Straight rebuilds if all they have to replace are bearings and gaskets are very reasonable.

Thanks, Jeff. "Mickey Mouse" is exactly the right term for those gaskets. I'm going to give your idea a whirl ... as much as I can still whirl... and will update you in the next couple of weeks. Happy aluminum boating! BILL
