Exhaust odor and noise

Post by RosieB12 »

Okay lads, here's my next "dumb" question. Both 1988 318's running great. BUT, last night I noticed more than usual engine noise from port engine exhaust outlet at stern. ALSO, lots of exhaust & gasoline odor in well deck while running on river at 2000 rpm. So ... where exactly do I begin looking for the problem and then where do I look next, i.e. "diagnosis" process. Low water flow from the raw water pump system.

I agree with wise Jeff. It happened to me & it was the pump.

This company did a great job rebuilding my raw water pump.

Thanks a million lads! I'll tear it apart today and see what's up. Hopefully just a chewed-up impeller. BILL

Back again, Lads, and there's "trouble in River City." I purchased and installed a new Sherwood G7B raw water pump only to find that my previous "exhaust noise/fumes" problem is unchanged. The engine seems to be running just fine and throwing lots of water out the exhaust pipe on the stern. I did notice that the port (fuming engine) raw water strainer has lots of turbulence inside which is absent from the starboard (non-fuming) engine. So ... I've reasoned that the churning in the strainer is because there's not enough pump suction to pull the water out of the strainer. Does that make sense? And if so, with a new pump where might my problems lie? Ugh! I really don't want to call the marina mechanic if ya'll have any other ideas. If not, I'll have to bite the bullet and call in the pro. Thanks. BILL

BILL[/quote]Go for the simple first. Make sure the gasket on the strainer is secure. It may be (it was for me) that air is getting into the line. Also check the hose.

P.S. Exactly which section of the hose? From the strainer to the pump?
