Carburetor Stud

Hello,

I sheared off a carb stud that looked like it had been over torqued a time or two before. I did this in the process of replacing my old Carter AFB with a 1409 on my 318. It’s hard to tell if the studs can be removed from the manifold, so I am looking for an opinion on whether that is possible. I don’t know if those are threaded in or if they are welded / cast as part of the manifold. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks

Not cast or welded in. Can you put a picture of it on here? ( I was thinking that you don't have studs into the manifold , but bolts that go into it.) Anyway, you are going to learn about penetrating oil, easy outs, left hand drills and clean living and dirty words. First , soak it with penetrating oil. I like Kroil oil. Stuff a clean rag into the throat, or better yet, seal it with duct tape to keep the dirt out. File the broken end flat if you can. Center punch it in the center, drill it and remove it with an easy out. They make left handed drill bits for this. If you are lucky it will back out as you drill it.

Not my manifold in the picture, but this is the bold that broke. Only the top inch is gone.... not enough to bolt down the carb.

They are in fact threaded into the manifold, and you got lucky if it broke off and left you something to work with. Best thing to do is grab hold of the stud with vise grips or such, heat up the casting around the base of the stud with a torch and work it back and forth until you can back it out. If you can weld a nut on top of the stud, even better. Don't heat the casting any hotter than enough to make it start smoking.

Your clean living has paid off. Never happens for the rest of us. You have an easy one to fix. As Mr. Rice stated above: oil, heat, vice grips.

"You have an easy one to fix."

Ah-hem. Good luck!

Jeff

PS: For God's sake don't snap off an Easy Out trying to get it out.
