Any advice on cleaning it without hurting it?

The only thing I ever used on the inner-most part of the Capac sensor (that's the 3" or 4" circle in the middle that should never be painted = the larger outer portion of the mounting may be painted) was some dish soap on a soft wet towel. The silver chloride coating on the sensor is quite thin and if you damage it, the Capac is Caput. I cannot recall whether cleaning it (gently) ever made a difference in the reading.
