I have had the props grab air many times when there is a strong cross wind (and waves) and I am not tacked into them. there is one part of my home lake where you have not much of a choice of heading if there is a strong west breeze and you want to go. I don't think it is cavitation per se when the tip of the prop comes out of the water. I don't go over 10 mph under these conditions and I am confident there has been no damage to the cutlass bearings or other parts over the years.
