festoon running light bulb size

Post by JEB »

anyone know the size of the running light festoon bulbs?
Also what is the spec on the mast light bulb.

going down to the boat and they have no place to buy anything out that way so I need to pick things up on the way.

thanks for any info

Would recommend following...
- Switch to led bulbs. They will save on battery power!
- Both festoon AND bayonet led bulbs can be easily found.
** Rear (transom) light - use a "bright white" bulb (higher number in color range <6000>. This will be readily visible from a good distance
** Rear cockpit light - use a warm white (2700 or 2800). This will provide a pleasing illumination if you're sitting outside enjoying the evening. Higher range will be stark and hard on the eyes.
** Mast light - here you'd want the high range color. It is stark/bright and easily seen at and beyond the required 2 miles away.
Red/Green running lights - believe the high color range works just like the stern & mast lights... Bright /highly visible at/beyond 2 miles is best.

I'll be going to my boat today and will try to get ID numbers off the above light's bulbs and post here for you.**

** adding info to a signature will allow better information cuz we'll know the type/style of your boat.

Also recommending you switch where possible to LED. Don't know whether they are still in business but in the earliest LED days, one company made a clever replacement LED masthead light fixture that changed function depending on how many times on/off switch was flicked. Steady on/on at dusk/SOS/steady flash. Wish I could remember name, darn it. It may be searchable.

This could be similar to the light Joel talks above. It has 3 finctions:
- anchor light
- tri light (port / starboard / anchor)
- SOS strobe

Bill, nice find. I think that one may be for sailboats but the concept is very close.

Here's another one: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/558305685029642815/

On the festoon bulb, couldn't you just remove it and take it over to your marine store for a replacement?

Thanks Joel...

Taking bulb to marine store...

... certainly doable...

...you can put the bulb in one pouch of a saddle bag and the extra cash the marine store's charge for their bulb in the other.

I have become a big user of online purc h asing, especially of Amazon as a prime member. Purchasing enough stuff pays for the cost/yr and get free shipping on most stuff.

On the other hand that is how marina's/ store stay in business. Hard to employ someone when everybody orders off of Amazon. Which I am guilty of myself!

TinLizzy's point well takenj. If brick and mortar stores are run out of business by the cheaper online alternatives, there wiil be no one left when you want to go to a store and see the merch, read the packaging to size up its suitability. The extra price in the long run is actually small.
