Hooking up a Hot Water heater to raw water 318

It has been a long time since I have been on the forum. Health issues pretty much limited my boating last season. Back up and going strong!

Anyway time for spring commissioning. My Raritan OEM Hot Water heater finally rusted out. Gee only 31 years of service!

I would like to replace it with a heater that is 120V and also see all now have heat ex-changers. Doe anyone have a drawing showing where to run the ex-changer lines on a Chrysler 318 Raw water cooled engine.

It would be nice to have it heat water underway.

Thanks!

Barkleydave

Glad to hear you've recovered.

First source would be Raritan - their units have gone into almost every kind of setup one could imagine. And it would be great to post the results and a how-to once you've done the project

Inlet line off the intake manifold , return line back into engine circulating pump suction.

Pull the allen wrench fitting out next to the bypass line on the pump and pipe in the water return there. Use PB blaster to get it loose, engine warmed up. That way you are on the discharge (intake manifold) and suction ( Pump volute) sides of the circulating pump, regardless of t-stat position.

Dave, the supply to the heater comes out of the intake manifold and returns in the top of the water pump.

Hope the picture makes it , first try.

Welcome back!

Do you have to have the heater connected to your engines? A good, well-insulated heater will hold a lot of hot water for several hours.

Jeff, the heater is hooked to the starboard engine it does a wonderful job. We camp on our M a lot -cruise to a spot on Friday night drop anchor and still have hot water in the morning. Water heater is 11 gallons with a heat exchanger , also can use the electric element to boost it hotter in less than 10 minutes next morning . Still warm at supper time . Hot showers are nice on the back deck in the fall, when the temps getting cooler. ;)

Some people sure are soiled! What's a little semi-cold shower water now and then?

Sounds like you're back to enjoying your M again. Glad to hear it.
