Stern railing design

Post by shade2u2 »

What do you call the re-inforced fabric thingy that is mounted on the stern railing on Marinette's? I outlined it in red in this picture.
I don't think that I've seen it on other models of boats.
I was considering removing it. What do you all think?

If you have ever rode near the stern you get a little wet. You would get a little wetter without it.

Good point.
Is that it's purpose?
Still, what is it called?

There seems to be no nautical name for it - we called it a skirt and so it was.

Purpose...
I'm wondering if it was added to add to the aesthetic appeal of the "cruiser look"?

Name...
skirt (ing) works for me as well.

Should probably remove it and sell it to me.

Also works as a place to mount grill, help keep grand children in , something to grab getting on or from swim platform. and a place to lean fishing pole on and something else to paint every few years. unless you have it power coated

"Skirt" or "splash curtain" sounds good to me. I think that I had heard that before - maybe here on this forum.
It does seem to be unique to Marinette. Many sailboats have cables but not the solid fabric skirt as far as I have seen.
I am definitely keeping the railing and the skirt also. It is a little dingy looking but will try to clean it up some.
Thank you.

On the subject of the splash Curtain mentioned here. I am rebuilding a 37 double cabin and one small piece of curtain was damaged in a storm a few years back while the boat was sitting on blocks. The metal inside the canvas was broken during the storm does anyone know what its called or where to locate it for purchase?
