Replacing nav/fishfinder

Post by cantolina »

Tel me what you're running, and why you like it so much. I'm getting ready to replace the old Hummingbird depth finder for something more "this century". Any tips or tricks, especially regarding replacing thru hull transducers?

Garmin 74C, combo GPS and Fishfinder. All around fantastic unit for navigation and as a fish finder, depth sounder.

If you have thru hull currently in place and it worked, you should be able to use the existing opening for the new unit. Thru hulls, ahead of the prop turbulence, generally have more consistent results. If you mount on the transom, the mfr instructions I've seen have been very helpful to get you on the right spot. I had good results with both Garmin and Northstar which is now Simrad and which probably has blended the Northstar tech into their products. Biggest item for me was that they were so versatile, you had to practice which button to push to give you the correct readout. They are smarter than I ever was (not hard).
