Hynautic H-50 Hydraulic Helm Unit Restoration

Postby carl » Mon Apr 08, 2019 3:41 pm

While restoring my fly bridge I found that the Hynautic H-50 hydraulic helm unit aboard my boat was leaking steering fluid out from around the shaft behind the wheel. I removed the unit from the boat and took it to the bench top where I completely tore it down to its last ball bearing. It is actually a very simple and basic hydraulic pump unit and in my opinion very well built with rather cool internal mechanical workings. In my opinion it is a do it yourself repair task. I went online and ordered two seal kits (one for the fly bridge and the other for the lower helm station in the salon) from Wholesale Marine, https://www.wholesalemarine.com/telefle ... l-kit.html The seals and O-rings I removed from my helm unit were way past their service life, badly deteriorated, hard and cracked. On the bench top I meticulously cleaned all of the components and I am now awaiting delivery of the new seal kit for reassembly. I took advantage of this disassembly to bead blast the helm unit body and trim ring and powder coated them both semi-gloss black to match the rest of my boats trim and I'm glad I did as the finish on them was also wasted. More to come...

You are my hero. You've got to be running out of things to powder coat, replace, re engineer, rebuild or flat out make cool? Would you consider putting me in your will? Love the restoration threads. Keep up the great work!

The new HS-05 seal kit arrived today, not much to it, $31.55 for seven pieces with one PolyPack Seal, one Wiper and five O-Rings (two of which I didn’t need in my Helm's model year)…its more of a glorified O-Ring kit but it’s all that’s needed to reseal the unit for another twenty plus years. It also comes with two sheets of paper, the first is an exploded view of the helm with some important notes in the margin, the second is a detailed step by step procedure for the Air Purge (bleeding) of the entire system which I thought was very well written.

After cleaning start reassembly by installing the nine pins into the Ball Cage. I tapped them home into their pockets lightly with a small wooden mallet.

Install your new rubber Wiper from the kit into the Helm Body.

Followed by the new rubber PolyPack Seal from the kit. This is the main seal for the Wheel Shaft, the one that was leaking for me.

Followed by your Thrust Bearing Pack...Clean and visually inspect these closely. The races are precision ground and you can flip them over and start with a fresh side to the thrust bearing if you see any wear or scoring. I saw very slight discoloration and flipped them for insurance purposes only.
