Fuel Filter inside our gas tanks

Post by Trowerpower »

Having a fuel delivery problem on our 1987 32ft sedan fly bridge. Is there a filter inside the tank? I believe my fuel pump is the problem. We have two 75 gallon tanks. The starboard engine is running great. Thanks your imput in advance.

BigM
On both my 1974 and 1975 Marinette's there were no filterers or screen on the pick up inside the fuel tank.
Only the stone filter after the tank and the small canister inline filter at the carb.
What pressure are you getting at the carb :?:
4 psi should be the minimum when ruining balls out.

We have one 120 gallon tank with two pickups on either side and the gauge in the center. Thought I had a pickup problem as well, turned out to be one of the anti-siphon valves, changed both out, ran perfect. Try running the port engine off the starboard tank.

My 72 28 express had an issue with the pickup being corroded out..... I had to replace the stand pipe inside of the tank. The bottom 6" of the stand pipe looked like Swiss cheese and crumbled when I touched it. I reduced the problem to the tank by running the boat off of an outboard fuel tank for a few miles, leaving the rest of the lines in tact will tell you if the problem is in the tank or the lines/filter/pump.

Replaced the fuel pump (mechanical) problem solved.
Did not think it was debris in the fuel system, been buying my gas at the same marina all along. The other engine was doing fine, separate tank.

A followup on Trowerpower's note: glad to see how you tracked issue down to bad fuel pump. Good detective work. "Been buying gas at the same marina" is an assumption that could get in the way of getting problem fixed - it's always likely that something that's been goping well for a long suddenly goes south. Like a brand new part failing out of the box. Glad the marina wasn't source of problem..just be aware that one day it might be. Happy M Boating
