Exhaust manifold tubes

I am replacing a leaking manifold/riser/swivel elbow on my 360 Chrysler. It has the log style manifolds with exhaust to the rear. The original manifold was installed with the water tube and had the water entering the front of the manifold at the water tube.
My new manifold (Barr) instructions says that water should enter from the bottom front to use the water tube and no tube is used when enter through the front top. The present setup has worked for 37 years. How have others installed new manifolds

I left those suckers out and never had a problem--and the water came in the front! (PO set it up like that.)

My two new rebuilds are set up per the barr instructions, leaving the tubes out and both run nice and cool.

Thank you!

I believe the original design was a case of over-engineering.
