If after checking it’s not working, what T-stat would you recommend? Any standard 160 deg for the 1984ish 318?

140 for raw water cooled and 160 for closed cooling.

I used to use standard automotive stats (rarely had to change one).

Ok, replaced both 160 deg thermostats with the 140 deg type. Both engines running a tad cooler and no temp spikes on STBD to speak of. I feel confident that this issue is now closed. Thx everyone for comments and support. Makes me wish I had more issues to solve :-)

Looking at Jeff's post up a few items, we assume you have raw water cooled engines. Yes? meanwhile, glad to hear you got the results you wanted
