trans noise

Post by ddependo »

OK Marinette brothers, Have a new one for me.
Just completed fixing ring gear on port engine. Got everything back together and starts fine but makes a clunking noise in neural at all rpm range. Put in gear , forward or reverse and noise goes away. Sound like it is coming from area of damper. Damper looked ok when apart . Any suggestions. I don't think I have enough blood left to take it all apart again. Rough job for a old man!

If it didn't rattle before, but rattles now, I might suspect the bolts mounting it to the flywheel didn't get tightened. At least those can be checked through the timing hole.

Not sure if Chryslers suffer the same issue, but the flywheel on GM engines sometimes crack around the bolt holes at the crankshaft, which causes a clunking noise in neutral.
