You don't believe in "rear main seal in a can"? Me neither. Snake oil.

In all the years I have been working on boats and equipment, there have only been a few "wonder" products that I don't condemn, and even fewer that I recomend.
The recomended:
Sea Foam (For gasoline ONLY)
Stabil Marine (the blue stuff)
Stanadyne diesel fuel treatment (this stuff is incredible. It has saved on at least 10 sets of injector changes in some bad running engines)
Lucas trans fluid addidtive (I ONLY use this in manual transmissions that require ATF and New Process transfer cases. Quiets them and gives smoother shifts.)

I have found over the years that the large bolt holding the oil filter bracket to the engine has a tendancy to losen over time. Simply tightern this has stopped a lot of my oil leaking into the bildge. :o The next culpert is the nipple at the rear of the engine where the oil sender and alarm senders attach.
It has a tendency to crack over time.

I also had the oil alarm switch sender crack a cause a leak.
Easy fix & carried by Napa.

In the last few years I have seen the internal diaphram fail on the oil pressure alarm switch and leak on alot of boats. One broke the plastic housing and pumped all the engine oil out. Cost him an engine. These have all been 1980's vintage Chrysler and Crusader engines.

Those pressure and alarm switches are notorious problem spots. When mine gave out and gushed oil, I luckily happened to be looking over the engine at that moment and shut it down, savings really big repair bills and major cleanup. One of the lessons, for me, is that those things ought to be replaced every two years. They are cheap and replacement is easy.

Agreed. I replaced an oil pressure switch a year on my old 32 footer. Used standard "idiot light" switches.

Jeff

PS: The temperature switches (for the alarm system) need to be removed and tested now and then. (Use a pan of boiling water and an ammeter to test them.) Of the four that were on mine (the original setup with twin engines) I think only one was working (and that cost me an engine). I added two more (one per exhaust manifold per engine) and tested/ replaced those that were lying to me.
