Regarding Transmission fluid, is there a particular type to use in these Chrysler marine transmissions?

Have used Rotella in everything for years, with the Lucas additive. Run Rotella Synthetic in my outboards with the synthetic additive too. Would be interested to hear what everyone is running in there transmissions, me standard ATF.

For those that have Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmissions (which should be all but the very early boats from the 50's or 60's) multi purpose ATF would be the proper fluid. This is what replaced the Dexron/Mercon fluid. Don't run the dexron VI fluid because it has aditives that don't jive with the clutch material in the Velvet Drives. I don't like running synthetic oil in them, especially if they have been rebuilt, because the bronze clutches will actually slip more. Remember, these are industrial transmissions meant for boats, backhoes and dozers, not cars.

What I meant to include was how do you change/flush them? is there a filter to change? Is it a good idea to add a quart of Lucas?

There's supposed to be a screen in the lower right fitting going to (or from?) the oil cooler. Mine didn't have one, however.

You can suck out the oil from the dipstick opening and refill it a few times to get a good change. Be sure to get ALL the oil it needs for so very little oil is in the fool things compared to car/ truck trannies. Running it with a cup of oil low can cause slippage!

What is your oil pressure once warmed up? This reminds me, I need to check mine with a gauge to verify my helm gauges.....I’m thinking they read high.

40 to 60 as I recall.

The Rotella ha some ZDDP in it, but I always added more.

Amazon carries 10w30 Rotella Rotella T4 Triple Protection Diesel Eng ... CCbR6Y1KT7

That’s what I’ve been using. My engines have 700 hrs and that oil weight doesn’t slip past the rings yet. I do add a 1/2 bottle of zddp additive as recommended.

I use my oil pump to remove the transmission fluid. I’ve read that the multipurpose ATF is the correct fluid as mentioned before. I put Dextron in mine a few years ago and haven’t noticed slippage. I will be changing it this spring to multipurpose as recommended.

HonestCharlie...

Starboard's pressure (as I remember from last season) had gone from about 60 (?) psi to 45.
Port pressure - rock solid at 60
