LED Light Bulbs

Post by bcassedy »

Bought some led replacement bulbs to try as replacement to incandescents in instruments. Work great! Takes a little pressure to get them into sockets but they do work fine. Only caveat.... appears the instrument maker put a orangeish rubber "hood" over the regular bulb to dim them a bit. The instrument's display seems to be more "defined" which I like. The leds don't appear to project too much light when facing the instrument. Looking at the instrument from behind... the whole body of the instrument "glows". Since there's little heat from these, I don't think (to be determined) it'll be a problem. The rubber "hood" will fit over the new led's if needed. Plan on also replacing the upper station's (and lower station's overhead console's) backlight's with same type.

They work well.

has anyone converted the bulbs in the standard dome lights to LED?

I replaced the automobile type 12v bulbs in the "can" fixtures in the early 1990's when LED's were a novelty and expensive. Made a great, low-draw night light. For illumination, the early ones were dim. Today, the technology has raced forward, the bulbs are widely available and inexpensive.

I replaced the 1156 dome bulbs with 13 SMD LEDs from eBay 10 bulbs $10. A lot cheaper than any auto or big box stores. They are slightly dimmer than the incandescents but at night the light is softer and plentiful.
