My boat did that crapola for years without a problem--especially at this time of year (cooler water temps). I know it's a concern, but you temps are spot on.

They used 1 inch for 1:1 drives and 1 1/4 inch for 1.52:1 drives.

That 3,000 rpms is a mite low. I'd check to see if the distributor advance is working correctly with a timing light that has an adjustable scale--you can buy one from Harbor Freight (or maybe borrow one from Auto Zone).
