Last season I did a touch-up coat with TotalBoat Kryptonite which I would think would be rather similar to the Alumipaint AF.
I will be trying something else next time. It just didn't seem to hold up that great. Just my opinion.

Re: Etching the Bare Aluminum Post Sandblasting?
Carl, The picture is small and grainy so you can't tell - but I do have a navy blue boot stripe just like most BigM s do. It needs another touch-up but it is very easy to do. Taped it off with blue painter's tape and used a mini roller with Rustoleum marine topside paint. Eliminating the boot stripe...

Couldn't think of it before but just remembered - Keystone Automotive also carries an aluminum etch product that will work for this.

Re: Etching the Bare Aluminum Post Sandblasting?
Carl, This is just my 2 cents... Etching is a chemical process which removes the oxide layer from the surface of the aluminum, allowing paint to adhere to the metal. One product for this is Sherwin Williams dual etch. Available through their automotive division and you probably have to order it in s...

Re: Interlux Bilgekote Paint
I too have kicked around this idea but have not yet tried the product. If you are applying the Bilgekote to bare aluminum there is of course a need to prep and etch the metal surface just like painting the outside of the hull, or the coating will not stick. If you are just using it to cover over the...

Re: Proper painting of hull
If you have areas of aluminum that are pitted, PC-11 epoxy has been recommended by others on this forum. After the first coat of primer, fill the pits with PC-11. I had my hull hydro-blasted a couple years ago and found some very minor pitting. I filled with the PC-11 and it seems to have held up ve...

Re: TRAILER PURCHASE INFO NEEDED
Accurate specs on the 60's era BigM 's seems hard to come by... Here is a post from MetalHead (who runs this site) from a couple years ago. He has a twin engine 1963. I have a 63 Express. I tow it with a trailer with 2 - 5500lb 6 lug axles and a 3500 series RAM dually. I think 3 axles would be bette...

Re: MerCruiser Repower question
It's all about prop shaft rpm. If your boat has the 1.52:1 transmission WITH the 1 1/4 " driveshaft, then you're in good shape. But if yours has the 1:1 trans and that skinny 1 " prop shaft, you'll have massive propeller problems with significantly more horsepower. Jeff - maybe a differen...

Boat Fires
I feel like I have heard about a lot of boat fires this year so I started reading about what causes them. I found this article to be interesting: http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/magazine/2015/october/boat-fires.asp MOST COMMON REASON FOR BOAT FIRES: DC electrical problems, especially in the engine c...
